Xiaomi to launch Mi 5 in India on March 31

Xiaomi is all set to introduce their latest flagship smartphone, the Mi 5 in India on March 31 at an event in New Delhi, as promised during the Redmi Note 3 launch event. The smartphone is expected to go on sale in the country starting from early April. It will be very interesting to see if Mi India brings the ‘Pro’ edition with 4GB RAM, 128GB ROM and 2.15 GHz Snapdragon 820 processor, that will go on sale in China starting from April 6, 2016.


Xiaomi Mi 5 Specifications

The Xiaomi Mi 5 features a 5.15-inch (1920 x 1080 pixels) Full HD LCD display with 2.5D curved protection. It has a brightness of 600 nits and comes with a NTSC color gamut of 95%. It is powered by a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 (MSM8996) 64-bit processor along with Adreno 530 GPU. It packs in 3 GB of LPDDR4 RAM along with 32 / 64 GB of internal storage (UFS 2.0) or comes with 4 GB of LPDDR4 RAM and 128 GB of internal storage (UFS 2.0). The device runs on MIUI 7 based on Android Marshmallow OS. One version comes with a 3D glass body with strong glass on the back side and another has ceramic.

The Mi 5 rock a 16 megapixel rear primary camera with dual-tone LED flash, Sony IMX298 sensor, f/2.0 aperture, Phase Detection Auto Focus (PDAF), 4-axis OIS. It can shoot 4K videos, comes with DTI pixel isolation technology and Spectra image processing. It comes with a 4 megapixel front-facing camera with f/2.0 aperture and 80-degree wide-angle lens for selfies and video calling. It support Dual SIM (nano), comes with a fingerprint sensor and an infrared sensor. It is 7.25 mm thick, weighs 129 grams for the glass variant and 139 grams for the ceramic variant.

On the connectivity front, the Mi 5 comes with 4G LTE with VoLTE, 3G HSPA+, WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac (Dual Band) MIMO, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS, NFC, USB Type-C and USB OTG. The smartphone packs in a 3,000 mAh built-in non-removable battery under the hood that supports Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0. A 5 minute quick charge will offer up to 2.5 hours of talk time.


The Xiaomi Mi 5 is available in White, Black and Gold color variants and has been priced at CNY 1999 (US $305 / INR Rs 20,810 approximately) for the standard 3GB RAM with 32GB ROM variant along with 1.8 GHz Snapdragon 820 chipset. The high-end version with the same 3GB RAM, 64GB ROM and 2.1 GHz Snapdragon 820 chipset will cost CNY 2299 (US $351 / INR Rs 24,001 approximately) and the exclusive Mi 5 Pro ceramic black edition with 4GB RAM, 128 GB ROM and 2.15 GHz Snapdragon 820 chipset costs CNY 2699 (US $412 / INR Rs 28,097 approximately) in China.

We will get to know the Indian pricing on March 31 itself but if we were to make some guesses, we would place our bet on a starting price of Rs 21,000.
