Xiaomi announced their much awaited flagship smartphone, the Mi 5 at an event in China on February 24. It comes in couple of variants with different RAM and storage options and is currently only selling in China now. However, third-party reseller Gearbest is taking pre-orders for the Xiaomi Mi 5 32GB ROM + 3GB RAM variant and will deliver them globally.
The Xiaomi Mi 5 is available in White, Black and Gold color variants on Gearbest and has been priced at US $439.99. It is on pre-order now and will start shipping from April 15, 2016. This particular 1.8 GHz Snapdragon 820 chipset, 3GB RAM and 32 GB ROM variant has been officially priced at CNY 1999 (US $305 / INR Rs 20,810 approximately).
Hence, you need to pay a premium of around $140 if you want to import the Mi 5. It may not be a viable option for most consumers but for hardcore Xiaomi fans, it is a great option, specially in places where the Mi 5 won’t be sold officially, ever. On asking about why Gearbest is not taking pre-orders of the 64 GB and 128 GB variants, the officials said that there is no supply of these in the Chinese market yet.
