Top 5 reasons not to buy Micromax Canvas Sliver 5

Micromax announced the Canvas Sliver 5 around a month back in June, priced at Rs 17,999. The pricing was absurd and we thought it will be rolled back when it goes on sale. However, it did not as the smartphone went on sale couple of days back. Thus, we bring you the top 5 reasons not to buy the Micromax Canvas Sliver 5.

First of all, we were present at the event and expected (most bloggers & media) Micromax to announce a flagship, like the Canvas 5. However, it was the Canvas Sliver 5. Well no issues there but the amount spent on ad campaign with Hollywood superstar, Mr. Hugh Jackman and marketing on a whole should not be buried upon the consumers. Since, the complete dynamics of the Indian smartphone market has changed, Micromax should step up their game.

Do check out our Micromax Canvas Sliver 5 hands on and first impressions as well.

Top 5 reasons not to buy Micromax Canvas Sliver 5

The Micromax Canvas Sliver 5 features a 4.8-inch (1280 x 720 pixels) HD AMOLED display which is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3. Yes, we found the display to be fairly bright and vivid during our hands on time. However, you can get Full HD 1080p display ranging between 5 to 5.5-inches in lower than Rs 15,000. For example: Lenovo K3 Note, Xiaomi Mi 4, Mi 4i, Phicomm Passion 660 and many others. So, why would you pay Rs 17,999 for a 4.8-inch HD AMOLED display? Think hard!

The Canvas Sliver 5 is powered by a 1.2 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 410 64-bit processor. Yes, it is the tried and tested processor from Qualcomm but it is also available in Rs 6,000 budget smartphones. We cannot justify buying a Rs 17,999 smartphone with an underpowered processor, when the likes of Xiaomi Mi 4 is offering a 2.5 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor at Rs 14,999.

The Canvas Sliver 5 comes with a 8 megapixel auto-focus rear camera with LED flash, Sony IMX219 sensor, Blue Glass filter. In our hands on time, it did an above average job and also had issues with focusing at times. In comparison, the Mi 4 has a 13 megapixel rear camera with LED flash, f/1.8 aperture, Sony IMX214 sensor and six-element lens. So, this is also a con for Sliver 5.

It packs in a 2,000 mAh battery under the hood and the compromise had to be made due to ‘Worlds Slimmest phone’ tag. This will not last even one day of usage but the point is there are smartphones available with better battery capacity, that too in lower budget. Everybody is certainly not interested in buying the worlds slimmest phone.

The biggest reason not to buy the Canvas Sliver 5 has to be its pricing. The above four points are completely based on pricing. The smartphone is being compared to other flagship devices because Micromax chose to blow up huge money on TVC and promotions with Hugh Jackman. If it was even priced at Rs 10,000 – Rs 12,000, it would have been certainly justified.

However, consumers will surely go out to buy this phone. The reasons for doing so can be many like being a Micromax fanboy, showing off the ‘worlds slimmest phone’, lack of market awareness or not trusting ‘Chinese’ brands offering VFM devices.

We did not intend to promote Xiaomi Mi 4 here but it is now the reigning flagship device in the Rs 15,000 category, after getting a price cut recently. Thus, the comparison was unavoidable.

Although, if you have read our Top 5 reasons not to buy Micromax Canvas Sliver 5, we hope you will reconsider your decision, if you ever had a plan of buying it in the first place. Write down your thoughts on the same in the comments section below.
