Sharp has developed a 5.5-inch 4K UHD IGZO LCD display which has a whopping 806ppi (pixels per inch) pixel density. The company previously developed 4.1-inch IGZO LCD panel which had 736ppi.
Sharp’s new 5.5-inch 4K UHD IGZO LCD panel has a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels with a whopping pixel density of 806ppi. It has been introduced at the China Information Technology Expo 2015 in Shenzhen last week. This new panel has a display area of 121 x 68 mm. It is bigger and definitely sharper if compared to last year’s 4.1 IGZO LCD display with 736ppi.
The display is based on semiconductor material indium zinc oxide. Hence, it promises better clarity compared to any TFT display. The 4K UHD IGZO panels offer sample pixel size of 10.5µm x 3, compared to a 4.7-inch 720p panels with 27µm x 3 sample size.
This new Sharp 4K UHD IGZO LCD display is expected to go for mass production sometime in 2016. Although, it is exciting to see these crazy pixels being crammed into small mobile displays but will the battery technology be able to keep up with this? We need more innovation from the battery manufacturers and then only we can dream of a perfect smartphone with insane resolution and full day battery life.
