After annoucing its latest flagship phablets on September 3, Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy Note Edge and Gear S smartwatch, they also launched the Gear VR to step into the virtual reality space (Sorry, we couldn’t cover it before). They have also launched the Galaxy Tab S Active yesterday. So lets dig into the Samsung Gear VR.
Samsung has collaborated with Oculus, which has made Oculus Rift that was recently purchased by Facebook as well. It has been designed specifically to work with the Note 4 to give the users a virtual reality experience on their mobile. The Gear VR’s working mechanics is similar to Google’s Cardboard VR concept which was shown off at Google I/O 2014.
Samsung said that the device is comfortable to wear as it has been built with soft, flexible cushioning as well as lightweight materials. The Gear VR is meant to be used with the Note 4 for an amazing and one of a kind movie, music or gaming experience.
The Samsung Gear VR goes far beyound expectations of how mobile technology can be used to consume content, and is a powerful representation of the progressive innovation of the Gear series. We are pleased to have partnered with Oculus VR to bring this incredibly immersive mobile content experience to consumers.
said JK Shin, President and CEO of IT & Mobile Communications Division at Samsung Electronics in an official release.
Gear VR has got initial partners like Marvel and Legendary Pictures who would be pushing content. They have got Vevo on board who is also offering access to more than 100,000 HD music videos, live concert events, etc. The Samsung Gear VR will come in Frost White through the Samsung online channel and with selective carriers only for this year. There was no mention of pricing of this device.
