Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ with Infinity Displays now official

Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+, the latest flagship smartphones in the ‘Galaxy S series’, has been officially unveiled at an event in New York today. They are the successors of the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge. Samsung has included the Iris Scanner along with Face Recognition and Fingerprint Scanner on the S8 and S8+ for added security and ease of unlocking the devices.

The company has also done away with the traditional hardware home button and hence the S8 and S8+ come with on-screen buttons that offer haptic feedback. Samsung has introduced a new Smart Assistant named Bixby, which will offer personalized experience to improve the way people interact with their phones. According to Samsung, it is not only a voice assistant but an intuitive and comprehensive interface which will leverage contextual awareness to learn users’ habits and then respond accordingly. The Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ feature a 5.8-inch and 6.2-inch (2960 x 1440 pixels) Quad HD+ Super AMOLED Infinity displays, respectively. These are always-on displays with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection on both front and back. The S8 and S8+ have a pixel density of 570 PPI and 529 PPI along with screen-to-body ratio of 83.6% and 84%, respectively. These are powered by the Exynos 8895 octa-core processor with Mali-G71 MP20 GPU or Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 octa-core processor with Adreno 540 GPU, depending on region. They come with 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM and 64GB of internal memory (UFS 2.1), which can also be expanded further up to 256GB by adding a microSD card. The devices run on TouchWiz UI based on Android 7.0 Nougat OS.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ feature a 12 megapixel Dual Pixel primary rear camera along with LED flash, f/1.7 aperture, OIS and 4K video recording with VDIS. It includes Pro, Panorama, Slow motion, Hyperlapse, Food mode, while the images can be saved as RAW files as well. On the front, there is a 8 megapixel secondary camera with f/1.7 aperture for clicking selfies and making video calls. The S8 and S8+ arrive in both Single and Dual SIM variants depending on region. The Indian variant will get a Hybrid Dual SIM (nano + nano/microSD card) option. These are also water and dust resistant (IP68 certified).

In the connectivity department, the S8 and S8+ include 4G VoLTE, 3G HSPA+, WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac (Dual Band) MU-MIMO, Bluetooth 5.0 LE, GPS, GLONASS, NFC, ANT+ USB Type-C. The S8 packs in a 3000mAh battery, while the S8+ comes with a 3500mAh battery. However, both of them support fast charging via both wired and wireless (WPC and PMA) charging. These phones also come with a lot of sensors including Accelerometer, Barometer, Fingerprint Sensor, Gyro Sensor, Geomagnetic Sensor, Hall Sensor, Heart Rate Sensor, Proximity Sensor, RGB Light Sensor, Iris Sensor and Pressure Sensor.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ are available in Midnight Black, Coral Blue, Orchid Gray, Arctic Silver and Maple Gold color variants. The S8 has been priced at $750 (INR Rs. 48,655 approximately) and the S8+ costs $850 (INR Rs. 55,084 approximately). They also come with a AKG by Harman earphones in the box worth $99 (INR Rs. 6,416 approximately). It goes on pre-order in the U.S. from tomorrow (March 31) but will go on sale from April 21, 2017. Also, the S8 and S8+ will be officially launched in India on May 5, according to our sources.
