Another Chinese smartphone brand has entered India. This time its PHICOMM with a flagship device called the Passion 660, priced at Rs 10,999 will go on sale exclusively on Amazon India from June 10, 2015. We were present at the launch event that place in Delhi on June 3 and used the smartphone for sometime. Hence we bring you the PHICOMM Passion 660 hands on and our first impressions.
First of all, PHICOMM has its sight on Indian domination as its CEO Min Zheng has announced at the event in Delhi, that the company will be investing US $100 million over the next three years in India by setting up R&D facility and on its marketing.

Display and Build Quality
The Passion 660 features a 5-inch (1920 x 1080 pixels) Full HD IPS display which is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3. It has a unibody magnesium alloy build which is very solid. It looks premium and the display looks crispy with vivid colours. It has a compact form factor with a 7.3 mm thick body and weighs 110 grams, in spite of rocking a 5-inch display. This makes it comfortable to grip the phone along with perfect overall balance. The back of the smartphone is non removable which has a matte finish and also packs a 2,300 mAh non-removable battery.
Performance, Software and Camera
The Passion 660 is powered by a 1.5 GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 (MSM8939) 64-bit processor along with Adreno 405 GPU. It has 2 GB of RAM and comes with 16 GB of internal memory which is expandable up to 64 GB via microSD card. PHICOMM has both the RAM and ROM area covered but as everyone knows the Snapdragon 615 is a ‘heat generator’ and we are guessing this won’t be spared as well. However, with our limited hands on time, the device did not heat up much. We would reserve our judgement on heating till we use it for a considerable time and come up with the verdict in our review. Normal usage was fairly snappy as usual, as is the case, in most of the smartphones these days.
It runs on Android 4.4.4 KitKat out of the box with Expect OS UI 5.0 (custom skin) on top of it. It is much like the stock version of Android but has a lot of interesting tweaks which manages to make use of the various in-built sensors such as G-sensor, L-sensor, P-sensor, E-compass, Barometer, Step-counter sensor, Gesture sensor. However, we have a complain. In mid 2015, a brand should not release a flagship smartphone with KitKat on board when Google has already unveiled Android M. At least we expect to see Android Lollipop out of the box. Even the company has not given us any timeline on the update. Still we would hope, they release it soon. We would bring you more information on Expect OS in our full review.
It is equipped with a 13 megapixel rear camera with LED flash, had a Sony IMX214 sensor and f/2.0 aperture. The rear camera sample looked quite good with good shutter speed. However, we would reserve our final judgement for the full review. On the front, there is a 5 megapixel front-facing camera for selfies and video calling. It has an ultra wide-angle lens which would be better for group selfies, if you’re into them.
PHICOMM’s Passion 660 is a Dual SIM (micro + nano) smartphone which supports 4G LTE bands in India (Band 3 and Band 40). However, it is a hybrid dual SIM solution where the second Nano-SIM slot doubles up as the microSD card slot. So, technically if you want more storage, which is a must for a smartphone for 16GB internal storage, you can use only one SIM card. It has the usual WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 and GPS connectivity with an array of sensors which is a plus.
PHICOMM Passion 660 Hands on: Conclusion
This new entrant in the Indian smartphone market from PHICOMM looks promising indeed. Priced at just Rs 10,999, you get a 5-inch Full HD display with Snapdragon 615 SoC coupled with 2GB of RAM. It has 16GB internal storage which can be expanded via the Hybrid SIM slot (up to 64GB). It runs on Expect OS 5.0 on top of KitKat and packs in a pedometer along with an array of sensors. You also get top of the line connectivity with 4G LTE support. It looks like the Indian smartphone market has got another VFM (Value for money) device. Anything which comes close to this smartphone is the Mi 4i from Xiaomi, priced at Rs 12,999.
