Motorola announces Moto Z Play with modular ‘Moto Mods’ accessories

Motorola has announced Moto Z Play in their new Moto Z lineup. It is a budget smartphone that also supports the modular ‘Moto Mods’ accessories. Lets check out the specifications, features and pricing of the devices below.

The Motorola Moto Z Play features a 5.5-inch (1920 x 1080 pixels) Full HD AMOLED display that is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass and has a pixel density of 403 PPI. It is powered by a 2.0 GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 64-bit processor along with Adreno 506 GPU. It has 3 GB of RAM and comes with 32 / 64 GB of internal memory, which can further be expanded up to 2 TB via microSD card. The device runs on the latest Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow OS out of the box.

The Moto Z Play rocks a 16 megapixel primary rear camera with dual-tone LED flash, f/2.0 aperture, 1.3 µm pixel size, Laser Auto Focus, Phase Detection Auto Focus (PDAF). On the front, it has a 5 megapixel front-facing camera with LED flash and wide-angle lens for selfies and video calling. It supports Single SIM (nano) / Dual SIM (depending on region). It is 6.99 mm thick and weighs 165 grams. It houses a fingerprint scanner at the front just like the Moto G4 Plus. It has water-repellent nano-coating, front-ported loud speakers along with 3-mics.

It includes 4G with VoLTE support, 3G HSPA+, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac (Dual Band), Bluetooth 4.0 LE, USB Type-C, NFC and GPS as connectivity options. The phablet packs in a 3,510 mAh battery with support for Turbo Charging.

Like Moto Z and Moto Z Force, the Moto Z Play also supports modular accessories called the ‘Moto Mods’. They get attached to 12 “magic pins” that are located at the bottom back of the device. These Moto Mods consist of a Moto Insta-Share Projector, JBL SoundBoost, Moto Shells and instant Power Pack.

The Moto Insta-Share Projector will turn the phone into a 70-inch projector, that can project at a wall or ceiling with 90 degree projection angle. The JBL SoundBoost and Power Pack will boost audio and increase battery life up to 22 hours, respectively. Also, the swappable Moto Style Shells now use premium materials such as real wood, leather, or patterned fabric.

The Moto Z Play is available in Black, Silver, White, Black Slate, Fine Gold and Sugar White color variants. It has been priced at US $499 (INR Rs 33,412 approximately) and will go on sale globally starting from September 2016. In Europe, it has been priced at 499 Euros. In the US, it will go on sale via and Verizon as Moto Z Play Droid Edition for $408 ($17/month) from September 8, 2016.
