Corning, the Gorilla Glass maker has just announced Gorilla Glass 4, which will provide better protection against falling. Most smartphone manufacturers use Gorilla Glass on their device to protect those HD displays.
The Corning Gorilla Glass 4 will survive most of the drops (80%) from 1 m (3.3 feet) on a rough surface which is similar to what we encounter during our daily usage of the smartphone.
Corning claims that Gorilla Glass 4 is twice as tough compared to the competition from different brands. The product information sheet (PDF) compares Gorilla Glass 4 with the previous generation Gorilla Glass 3 where the chart shows that 0.4 mm thick Gorilla Glass 4 is just slightly tougher than a 0.7 mm previous generation product. This would result in makers using less thicker glass without compromising the safety and in return, more sleeker and slimmer smartphones.
We would be able to purchase smartphones equipped with Corning Gorilla Glass 4 starting early 2015 since samples have been sent out. Since the inception of Gorilla Glass, Corning has managed to put its Gorilla Glass on 1,395 different devices which totals to more than 3 billion devices.
