Google to launch YouTube Kids Android app on February 23

According to a report from USA Today, Google is about to launch YouTube Kids on February 23, 2015. As the name suggests it is an app for the kids and only the Android version is coming tomorrow. We will definitely see the iOS and Windows apps but not on launch day.

YouTube Kids will cater to the kids with contents ranging from original episodes of TV shows for youngsters to videos from child-centric channels on YouTube. As it will be completely based on kids content, YouTube Kids will have separate services from the main app.

The app will have a home screen with eight options which would consist of choices from kids TV shows to other popular recommendations. YouTube Kids will come with four main options – music, learning, shows and explore.

On this announcement, Shimrit Ben-Yair, YouTube Kids Product Manager said,

“Parents were constantly asking us, can you make YouTube a better place for our kids. (Year over year) we’ve seen 50 percent growth in viewing time on YouTube, but for our family entertainment channels, it’s more like 200 percent.”

The YouTube Kids apps will include contents from National Geographic Kids, DreamWorks TV, The Jim Henson company, Thomas & Friends and more. As the app is meant for kids, parents will be able to set a limit on the amount of time their kids spend on watching videos and it is a basic feature.

YouTube Music Key subscription service was announced for Android, iOS and Web whose beta update started rolling out as well. YouTube offline mode is also now available in India.
