Cat S60 with first built-in thermal camera goes official

Cat S60 becomes the world’s first smartphone that comes with a built-in thermal camera. It has been launched by Cat Phones who are popular for their rugged smartphones like the Cat S50. Lets check out the specifications and features of this device.


Cat S60 Specifications

The Cat S60 features a 4.7-inch (1280 x 720 pixels) HD multi-touch display that comes with 540 nits of brightness and is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 4. The touchscreen can be used with wet fingers or while wearing gloves and can be easily viewed under bright sunlight. It is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 (Quad 1.5 GHz + Quad 1.2 GHz) processor along with Adreno 405 GPU. It has 3 GB of RAM and comes with 32 GB of internal memory which cannot be expanded via microSD card. The device runs on the latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS out of the box.

The S60 comes with an underwater 13 megapixel primary rear camera (waterproof) with dual LED flash. It has a 5 megapixel front-facing camera for selfies and video calling. It includes an embedded thermal camera by FLIR Systems. It will let the consumers to detect heat loss around windows and doors, spot moisture and missing insulation, identify over-heating electrical appliances and circuitry and see in complete darkness.

“The thermal camera visualizes heat that is invisible to the naked eye, highlighting temperature contrasts. It can pick up heat and measure surface temperatures from a distance of up to 50 to 100 feet, and see through obscurants such as smoke, enabling a huge range of use cases for building professionals, utility workers, outdoor sports enthusiasts, emergency first responders and more,” said the company.


The Cat S60 includes 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.1 and GPS as connectivity options. The smartphone packs in a 3,800 mAh battery under the hood. According to the company, it is the world’s most waterproof smartphone as it is waterproof up to 5 meters for one hour, hence, can be used as an underwater camera as well. It exceeds military spec 810G since it is built to withstand drops onto concrete from up to 1.8 meters and is dust proof as well.

The Cat S60 will be showcased at the upcoming Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2016 in Barcelona and will be released later this year for RRP €649 / $599 (INR Rs 41,045 approximately).
