ASUS India is going to have its biggest launch event ever tomorrow (April 23) which will see the unveiling of Zenfone 2 in three different variants as well as the ZenPower portable battery and other accessories. However, the ZenWatch will not be there.
A ZenMeetUp took place in Kolkata to showcase the upcoming ASUS Zenfone 2 and the ZenPower portable power bank and few other accessories. At the meet, we caught up with Peter Chang, Country Head of ASUS India and asked him, “Whether ASUS is looking to bring the ZenWatch in India anytime soon?” To which he answered, “The ZenWatch is not coming to India anytime soon. We are looking to have a solid smartphone consumer base here first and then will look forward to launching other devices.”
Consumers in India looking forward to the ASUS ZenWatch will be disappointed but you cannot blame ASUS. It’s the right decision considering smartwatches are still at ‘1st Generation’ mode and it will take time for the product to reach mass appeal, specially in a country like India. Also, with the extravagant launch of Zenfone 2, the company might lap up a considerable smartphone base and consider launching the ZenWatch here sometime in the future. ASUS VivoWatch was recently launched.
Nonetheless, lets look at the specifications of ZenWatch.
The ASUS ZenWatch has a 1.63-inch AMOLED touch display which has 320 x 320 resolution. The body has a curved stainless-steel case surrounded by a rose-gold-coloured band inset. The top of the watch is dominated a 2.5D curved Gorilla Glass 3. The watch comes with leather strap with a quick-release clasp out of the box, but one can swap it with their own 22 mm band to suit the mood.
The ASUS ZenWatch runs on 1.2 GHz Snapdragon 400 SoC which is also used in Samsung Gear Live as well as the LG G Watch and the circular G Watch R. It comes with 512 MB of RAM and 4 GB of internal storage. A 1.4 Wh battery, Bluetooth 4.0, a microphone and a bio sensor which can monitor your heart rate plus activity. It also comes with IP55 rating which makes it water-resistant.
ASUS has also added ZenUI elements on the smartwatch. These include “Watch Unlock” which lets your unlock your phone or tablet by simply touching the ZenWatch’s watch face, “Tap Tap” lets you toggle a pre-assigned function by double-tapping the watch, plus the self-explanatory “Cover to Mute,” “Find My Phone,” “Remote Camera” and “Presentation Control.”
