Earlier last week, we reported that ASUS is holding a press conference on May 30 at Humble House Taipei, ahead of the Computex 2016 and expected the company to launch new Zenfone products, specially the Zenfone 3 smartphones. While the schedule might remain intact but the company CEO has said that the new generation of Zenfones will be unveiled in June.
ASUS CEO Jerry Shen has also clarified that the new Zenfones will target the mid-range segment, however, the average selling price will be more compared to the previous generations. The company expects the Zenfone 3 Max to make up two-thirds of total sales, while Zenfone 3 and Zenfone 3 Deluxe will be the one-third. Also, above 90% of the new flagship smartphones from ASUS will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chipsets whereas the rest will be powered by MediaTek. ASUS smartphones were usually powered by Intel processors but that has changed significantly in the lower end ASUS devices last year. However, since Intel is thinking to exit the mobile processor market completely, it makes sense for ASUS to not rely on them anymore.
ASUS will still primarily cater to the $250-300 smartphone segment in most regions but will venture into the $300+ segment in China to compete with other Chinese brands like OPPO, Huawei and Xiaomi.
Since, the Zenvolution media invite carries Intel’s branding, we can certainly expect ZenBook laptops. Lets check out the rumoured specifications of the Zenfone 3 smartphones.
ASUS Zenfone 3 Rumoured Specifications
The ASUS Zenfone 3 will come with a thin aluminium design and sport 2.5D glass on both the front and rear side of the device. If we go by the rendered images, the smartphone will have a square rear camera module, that would be accompanied by a dual tone LED flash and a Laser Auto Focus. The phone is also expected to come with a biometric sensor. It will have three capacitive keys below the display, as usual. Most specifications of the device were not listed but it will feature a USB Type-C connector, front-facing flash and an optional “Smart Flip Cover”.
Now, if we move our attention towards the Zenfone 3 Deluxe, it will have a similar metal design but will come with a physical home button below the display along with two capacitive buttons on both sides. A fingerprint sensor has been mostly baked into that physical home button. Hence, the normal Zenfone 3 is likely to miss out on a fingerprint sensor, which is very disappointing, since fingerprint sensors are available on most budget smartphones nowadays. They will be available in Silver, Gold and Black color variants.
