Apple Inc. (AAPL) launches a new iPhone every year or two iPhones since last year and the new handsets always come with a brand new OS. Apple has revamped it’s mobile OS called iOS last year with the introduction of iOS 7 and this year they have announced iOS 8 at WWDC on June 2, 2014 with significant improvements. Let us go through the new features which will be available with iOS 8.
It will have iCloud Photo Library which basically means “You’ll never be without your photos”. In the new Photos app, it is very easier to navigate through the entire library which would also give smart suggestions. Smart editing options are now embedded in the Photos app itself which will also have photo filters. The Camera app comes with a new mode called Time-lapse videos where iOS 8 does all the work snapping photos at dynamically selected intervals.
The all new Messages app will feature an option to send voice messages along with video messages quickly and easily. You’ll now be able to share your location in the middle of a conversation with your loved ones.
This is a completely new feature on iOS and it redefines the way people will use iOS devices within a family. After setting it up, family members get instant access to each other’s music, movies, TV shows, books and apps. Anything can be downloaded at anytime without having to share an Apple ID or passwords. All the photos clicked on all devices can be uploaded to a single family photo album. Everyone’s schedule gets synced in each others Calender app making them an organised family. All the devices can use a single credit card to purchase apps or content where a parent might enable “Ask to buy” where his children would require to take permission before making a purchase.
With Continuity, Apple wants to bind a user in its ecosystem. With iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite, iPhone, iPad and Mac are connected like never before. A feature called Handoff lets one pick up right where he left on another device. It can be used with most of the apps like Mail, Safari, Pages, Numbers, Keynote, Maps, etc and developers can enable Handoff feature in their apps too. iPad and Mac can answer phone calls which you’ll receive on iPhone with just a swipe. Also, any kind of text messages can be sent from any of these devices having Handoff feature.
This is also a completely new app on iOS which would enable the user to measure heart rate, amount of calories burnt, blood sugar, cholesterol, etc. With the HealthKit SDK, developers would make new apps which will take the hospital industry to a whole new level altogether.
With iCloud Drive, sharing any file is a cake walk. Just upload files to iCloud from any iOS device or simply drag a file from a Mac running OS X Yosemite or a PC running Windows 7 or later. With iCloud Drive, one has access to all the latest version of documents on all the devices. One can also start a document on one device and finish it on another with iCloud Drive.
Apple claims iOS 8’s keyboard to be the smartest ever and we believe so. iOS 8 has an algorithm which would predict what a person is going to type next. It can even predict a casual conversation on Messages and a more formal conversation while using Mail. It will also be available for languages around the world.
For the first time in history of iOS, Apple will allow third party keyboards. Flesky, Swiftkey, Swipe and others are already working on their iOS keyboard and it will be available shortly.
It follows the iOS 7 design language and makes it a lot more useful for day to day use. iOS 8 should be available on September 9 which is also rumoured to be the launch date of iPhone 6. It will be compatible with iPhone 4s and above, iPad 2 and above, and also with iPod touch 5th generation.
We will cover more on iOS 8 and the upcoming iPhone 6 later, so stay tuned to our website.
