Android One smartphones can now be flashed with CyanogenMod

Google unveiled Android One devices back in September with three smartphones from different OEMs priced around USD 100. Google’s aim was to provide timely OTA updates to low-end devices but the company has messed up. Android 5.0 Lollipop update has not yet come to Android One devices and will be available sometime in February, 2015. Although, there is some good news as Android One devices is now supported by CyanogenMod.

Now, Android One device owners can flash official builds on CyanogenMod 11 which is based on Android 4.4 KitKat on their devices. CyanogenMod is one of the most popular custom ROMs around the world. They provide an opportunity to perform lot of customizations on your smartphone.

On this occasion, Cyanogen said in a blogpost,

“Android One represents Google’s attempt at reaching “the next billion users” – starting today CyanogenMod 11 (KitKat) builds are available for the ‘sprout’ devices. As the devices are currently setup for CM11 only (work on CM12 is in progress) these builds will trickle once a week, every Sunday.

This release represents a few firsts for us. Not only are these the first Android One devices and first official release of CM for these devices, the Android One is the first ever officially supported MediaTek device. MediaTek (MTK) devices have been notoriously difficult for the developer community to complete fully functional bring-ups, and this marks a milestone in that effort.”

The Micromax Canvas A1Spice Dream Uno and Karbonn Sparkle V Android One smartphones are available on AmazonFlipkart and Snapdeal respectively. All these three devices can be flashed with CyanogenMod 11 now. This has been possible due to the similarity of their hardware.

Recently, Cyanogen Inc has been in news in India for all the wrong reasons. First of all, the company partnered with YU Yureka exclusively in India, and then ditched OnePlus in the process. After which YU approached the Delhi High Court to stall OnePlus One sales in India as it came with Cyanogen branding. Now, the court has ruled in favour of OnePlus as they operate in a higher price segment. OnePlus One devices are now sold exclusively on Amazon India. The first sale of YU Yureka with Cyanogen OS will take place today exclusively on Amazon India at 2pm.
